The Building Efficiency Targeting Tool for Energy Retrofits (BETTER), is a free, easy-to-use, web-based tool (https://better.lbl.gov/) being developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Johnson Controls to target efficiency improvements in cities, portfolios, and buildings by turning readily-available, monthly energy usage data into recommended energy efficiency interventions (operational and equipment). This training will focus on how to collect, aggregate, cleanse, and prepare the data necessary for use of BETTER. It will also provide step-wise guidance to BEA and C40 participants on how to enter data into BETTER and use the outputs to: establish baseline energy performance; set energy performance improvement targets; make the business case to pursue performance improvements; and develop a “quick-wins” energy performance improvement strategy, focused first on no-cost/low-cost operational interventions, followed later by deep energy savings measures. BETTER is in beta version with targeted final release in 2021. Two speakers, Carolyn Szum and Han Li of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will introduce the tool and provide a live demonstration of entering data into BETTER, running the analysis, and utilizing results.
