Baku Climate Action Week

OVERVIEW

The inaugural Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2024) will take place from Monday 30th September to Friday 4th October 2024. It will mark a key point in the climate calendar as the international community prepares for COP29 in Baku in November 2024.

Following the UN General Assembly (10-24/9) and New York Climate Week (22-29/9), Baku Climate Action Week (30/9-4/10) will continue the momentum for the Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C, announced by the Climate COP Presidencies Troika, and support the COP29 Presidency’s 14-point Action Agenda.

With an international perspective and local context, Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW) will bring together key stakeholders from policy, private sector, finance, trade and investment, science & academia, cities and regions, arts and culture, civil society, and media as the next step from Bonn, London Climate Action Week, and New York, to build the foundations for a successful COP29.

SCOPE & OBJECTIVE

With its strapline – Engage | Innovate | Accelerate – Baku Climate Action Week brings a can-do approach to the climate challenge. It combines a global perspective with local action, bringing international thought leaders to inspire and engage local stakeholders at a strategic moment ahead of COP29.

BCAW 2024 will serve as the first step in a whole of society mobilisation effort in Azerbaijan, emphasizing the need to engage everyone and use innovation as the platform for a just and green transition for the country through multistakeholder engagement and partnership development.

BCAW will demonstrate Azerbaijan’s commitment as a serious and confident actor in national green transformation, regional leadership, and global influence in the lead-up to COP29. It will be an inflection point for a positive narrative on the green transition grounded in local and regional realities. It will also seek to support Azerbaijan’s transition through new collaborations, investments, and partnerships by like-minded partners committed to a just transition and climate action.

PROGRAMME

The week will focus on essential themes delivered in partnership with local, national, and international partners. The first half of the week (30/9-2/10) will showcase climate solutions involving public institutions, academia, and the private sector. The second half (3-4/10) will feature science, academia, arts, culture, and other sectors, leveraging Baku’s rich cultural heritage to tell the story of an ancient city and country in transition.

The programme includes walks, talks, and exhibitions to offer an immersive experience. Baku Climate Action Week will kick off a multi-annual nationwide climate conversation, building step-by-step towards a whole state and whole of society mobilisation. Multiple venues across the city will host public and private events during Baku Climate Action Week.

Visits to locations such as Baku Botanical Gardens, vividly illustrating how this desert city turned green, Walking Tours, and Excursions showcasing the history, architecture, environment, and unique geology of Baku are also being planned.
