The Botswana Green Building Council (BotGBC), in collaboration with the GlobalABC Adaptation Working Group, is hosting a regional meeting on the sidelines of COP28. The meeting aims to address the urgent need for climate change adaptation in the African building sector. Rising greenhouse gas concentrations are causing unprecedented changes in the climate, affecting weather extremes around the world. The latest IPCC report underlines the importance of understanding and mitigating the severe consequences of human-induced climate change, especially in regions with built environments designed for stable conditions.
In this landmark collaboration, the Government of Botswana through the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, underscores its resolute commitment to advancing climate action in the built environment. The government will allocate a dedicated Pavilion time at COP28 to provide a platform for the active participation of policymakers and practitioners in Accelerating Climate Resilience in the African Built Environment, both in Botswana and across the continent.
As evidence of the impacts of climate change mounts, the need to halve global emissions by 2030 becomes clearer. Climate resilience must be accelerated, and international and intercontinental cooperation is essential for a smoother transition. Participants will collectively work towards cultivating a comprehensive understanding of essential actions needed to ensure a sustainable, resilient future for the national and regional built environment. This regional meeting will serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration and advocacy, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable built environment in Africa.
