Over the past decade, subnational governments have been critical to the global fight against the climate crisis. Local leaders have been hard at work advancing bold on-the-ground solutions and making their voices heard during key moments – from their role advocating for the historic Paris Agreement that was secured in 2015 to their active participation in last year’s Local Climate Action Summit at the 28th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties meeting in Dubai (COP 28), where over 70 national governments recognized their importance and agreed to enhance collaboration through the new Coalition on High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP).
This year, as countries prepare their next round of climate commitments for 2035, the world is experiencing the impacts of what are likely to be the hottest annual temperatures on record. Strong action by forward-leaning cities, states, and regions in close partnership with national governments is essential as ever to keeping a 1.5 degree-aligned, climate-resilient future within reach.
In November 2022, President Biden announced the launch of the Subnational Climate Action Leaders’ Exchange (SCALE) initiative to elevate, equip, and empower these subnational champions, and the U.S. State Department and partners are pleased to host a SCALE high-level action dialogue at the Nest Climate Campus during Climate Week NYC on September 25, 2024.
SCALE’s Climate Week Action Dialogue will feature governors, mayors, and others representing subnational governments; representatives of national governments working on multi-level climate action; and representatives from civil society, private sector, multilateral, research and academic, philanthropic, and other organizations that are committed to enhancing and supporting subnational climate ambition.
The event will feature a main stage program from 9:00 - 9:45 am, followed by thematic roundtable discussions.
To share your interest in participating, please complete this short form by September 15. Confirmed attendees will be registered to access the venue on September 25 and will receive invitations to each SCALE event session on a rolling basis, as space at certain sessions is limited.
Registration will provide access to the relevant SCALE Action Dialogue session(s), as well as all other public programming at The Nest Climate Campus.
