MAIN GOALS - GENERAL ACTIVITIES - FIELD OF EXPERTISES

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) represents over 94,000 members whose expertise drives decisions making across the built environment. We are the local and global advocates for the value of architecture and provide architects the resources they need to do their best work. AIA drives innovation and positive change through the power of design.

ACTIVITY RELATED TO LOW GHG AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND RESILIENT BUILDINGS

The AIA 2030 Commitment is an actionable climate strategy that gives us a set of standards and goals for reaching net zero emissions in the built environment. The latest climate data tells us that reducing carbon emissions is not enough. To make the biggest impact, we must all commit to net zero emissions by 2030—a path that requires strong, immediate action. Since the built environment creates a staggering 40% of the world’s emissions, architects, engineers, and owners play a key role. More than 1,100 firms have already committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2030. From improving indoor air quality to reducing construction waste, the materials architects and designers specify matter. Our choices represent an enormous opportunity to improve the health of the planet and the people who live on it. The Architecture & Design Materials Pledge was developed to inspire a shift in how we evaluate the products and finishes that we specify on a daily basis. Participants commit to five overarching statements that will lead to more intentional product specification across their portfolios over time. More than 190 international architecture and design firms have committed to asking for materials transparency, collaboration, and preferable products that support human, climate, ecosystem, and social health.
