MAIN GOALS - GENERAL ACTIVITIES - FIELD OF EXPERTISES
Federated Hermes is a global institutional sustainable investor. We evaluate the complex dynamic relationship between our investments, society and the natural environment. In the first instance this means establishing a body of interdisciplinary science founded on empirical evidence from the global body of academic research across for e.g. mechanical engineering, architecture, materials science, neuroscience and social psychology, biochemistry, climatology, industrial applications of machine learning etc. I work across both private and public markets; at the core of my work is the application of climate-energy-economy-land-use modelling and simulation-based scenario analysis across our investment universe, including the development of a proprietary IAM (integrated assessment model) of the kind used by the modelling consortiums which inform the reports of the IPCC. We have a whole life (i.e. operational, embodied, and additional sequestration) net zero strategy for residential property, derived from regional carbon budget and climate sensitivity assumptions. This includes an analysis of operational ‘building physics’ modelling, a bounded decarbonisation corridor, lifecycle analysis of materials etc., alongside innovative ways to finance and enable the development of net zero property and energy systems at scale. Nature-based solutions are also a part of this science-based approach to net zero. We are interested in biophilic design, SUDS, etc. and other innovative forms of linking property and carbon sequestration. We are alongside this developing a system of ecosystems services valuation and Natural Capital Accounting.
