Union of Community Development Volunteers (UCDV) is a national indigenous development support organization (not-for-profit) founded in 2004 and duly registered as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) by National Bureau for NGOs (NGO Bureau) in Uganda. For the last 17 years of its existence, UCDV has gained exceptional skills, experience and expertise that has enabled the organization to contribute immensely on the government’s efforts of delivering social services to the people of Uganda especially in its main programmatic areas of interventions which include; Enabling Healthy Living, Education Support, Creating Economic Security, Managing Climate Change, Connecting Potentials and Consolidating institutional strengths for efficiency and effective service in her constituencies.
ACTIVITY RELATED TO LOW GHG AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND RESILIENT BUILDINGS
The following are some of UCDV’s activities implemented in support of climate actions in the buildings and construction sector since its inception 2004. - Over 1,000 water sources have been provided to the most water-stressed communities across the Uganda. (These include; constructed/protected natural spring wells, drilled boreholes and provisions for rain water harvesting tanks) - Over 500 drainable Ventilated Improved Pits (VIPs) toilets have been constructed at different school locations and communities to improve on the sanitation practices. - Over 400 facilities have been provided in urban centers for proper waste /garbage management so that the drainages are not blocked by garbage especially when it rains. - Over 200 incinerators for Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) have been constructed in various schools and health centers across Uganda. - Over 400 Bio gas systems have been constructed for schools, health centers and other institutions. - Over 700 energy cooking stoves have been constructed. - 10 school classroom blocks /structures have been constructed to provide a conducive learning environment for pupils /students who were previously studying under tree shades or condemned structures. - 6 Health centers / facilities have been constructed in the rural communities to provide access to healthcare services and close the gap of pregnant women and children dying on their way moving to the distant health facilities. - Over 500,000 trees have been planted as the organization’s efforts of mitigating - Over 200,000 people have been trained /sensitized on climate change mitigation measures.
