Call for pilots of circularity frameworks

It is critical to understand the role that the circular economy has in mitigating the triple planetary crisis. The first step is to comprehend the current state of circular economy in the buildings and construction sector to scale up policy development and use of circular solutions, and to understand the readiness of applying circularity approaches.

The GlobalABC Circular Built Environment working group helps governments and other stakeholders across the world in policy development, capacity building and knowledge creation and market transformation related to circularity in the built environment sector. The CBE group promotes assessment frameworks at different levels as the first step to getting started.

Circular Indicator Assessment Framework: Accelerating Circularity in the Buildings and Construction Sector through National Guidance and Supporting Implementation in Developing and Emerging Economies

The Circular Indicator Assessment Framework is a scalable tool to assess the state of circularity in the buildings and construction sector at the national level. The development of the assessment framework has been funded by Finland and it has been developed by UNEP with support from UNOPS and UN-Habitat.

If your country is interested in considering the piloting of this indicator framework at the national level, please email Geoffrey Morgan at UNOPS: [email protected].

Circular Transition Indicators (CTI) for Buildings

Consistent circularity measurement and the adoption of a standardised approach are keys to allowing stakeholders in the built environment sector to understand the circularity of their buildings. A robust set of metrics can support actions toward improving buildings’ circularity.

For this reason, WBCSD in collaboration with its members and external stakeholders, has been developing the Circular Transition Indicators guide for the building sector. The framework features measurements of material, energy, water flows and design while considering adding the social layer, resilience, nature impact and business value as a next step. The aim is to develop a framework that is recognised and used by the whole built environment value chain including policymakers worldwide.

If your organisation or company is interested in piloting the CTI for buildings assessment framework free of cost, please email Alessia Santoro at WBCSD: [email protected].
