Adaptation Hub: From Barriers to Action: Coordinating Adaptation Pathways for the Buildings and Construction Sector
| 10:00-11:30 CET

This is one of the Hubs and Action Groups Breakout Sessions, taking place on Day 2 of 2025 GlobalABC Annual Assembly. Registration link will be shared soon.

Venue: Room 1, Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, Dresden, Germany

Despite the growing impacts of climate change and the identification of effective adaptation solutions, progress in the buildings and construction sector remains insufficient. In response, the Adaptation Hub published the white paper "Why Are We Still Not Adapting?" in 2024, uncovering key barriers to action and driving critical discussions at COP28 and the inaugural Buildings and Climate Global Forum.

Now, we are focused on turning commitments into concrete steps. This collaborative workshop will help build tailored adaptation pathways for the 10 key stakeholder groups across the value chain, fostering collaboration and addressing cross-sectoral barriers to resilience. Through engaging group activities, participants will identify immediate actions, required support, and the cascading benefits of adaptation across the sector.

Join our workshop to:

  • Engage in dynamic group activities that explore actionable strategies for your
    stakeholder group.
  • Contribute to shaping a resilient future for the built environment by identifying and
    overcoming barriers to adaptation.
  • Collaborate with peers to ensure that the sector moves forward cohesively, with every
    stakeholder playing a pivotal role.

Agenda:

Introduction (10 minutes)

Welcome and Objective Setting

  • Brief overview of climate adaptation pathways and their significance for the sector.
  • Explain the goal: creating actionable and mutually supportive strategies.

Workshop Structure

  • Introduce the board, card system, and stakeholder roles.
  • Highlight the collaborative and reflective nature of the exercise.
Card Activity: Action Exploration and Discussion (3 Rounds, ~20 minutes each)

Round 1: "Now" (20 minutes)

Objective: Identify actions stakeholders can take immediately.

  • Groups discuss and evaluate the relevance of their pre-assigned action cards.
  • Add new actions on blank cards if needed.
  • Prioritize actions based on urgency, feasibility, and expected impact.
  • Discuss how these actions could support other stakeholders.
  • Place cards in the "Now" section of the board and add notes (e.g., hurdles, dependencies, opportunities).

Round 2: "Requires Support" (20 minutes)

Objective: Identify the type of support required from external stakeholders.

  • Groups review the "Now" section: Are these cards really a “now” card?
  • Participants reflect on the remaining actions cards and figure out if they require external support.
  • Discuss and define the specific type of support needed (e.g., policy changes, financial incentives, technical collaboration).
  • Place these cards in the "Requires Support" section, noting which stakeholders need to provide the support, how and why.

Round 3: "Supporting" (20 minutes)

Objective: Reflect on how selected actions contribute to systemic adaptation.

  • Groups revisit the "Now" and "Requires Support" sections.
  • Discuss how their actions will unlock opportunities or enable progress for others in the value chain.
  • Place blank cards in the "Supporting" section, noting downstream impacts and interdependencies.
Closing Remarks
  • Summarize key takeaways and next steps for incorporating insights into the adaptation pathways.
  • Reiterate the importance of continued collaboration within the GlobalABC network.
