The GlobalABC Adaptation Working Group brings together more than 20 actors, public and private and works towards the definition of a framework to assess and foster the resilience of buildings in the face of climate change. Ahead of COP27, this Working Group has produced two tools: a state of the art of resilience evaluation methodologies, and a collection of actionable models and strategies for adaptation. These works will be presented at COP27 and during a conference on November 4th.
What trends are emerging in terms of risk evaluation globally? Should all risks be approached in the same way? What are the relevant indicators? How to act quickly and decisively to answer the ever-changing challenges of adaptation to climate change?

A growing need for a systemic understanding of resilience assessment methodologies
Recent dynamics emerging from the European Union towards a comprehensive review of resilience assessment were the starting point of the Adaptation Working Group’s will to provide actors all along the value chain of the buildings and construction sector with a wide ranging and detailed overview of resilience assessment methodologies developed all around the world. Highlighting the strengths and limitations of every methodology will offer a greater transparency and will favour the emergence of more robust and concerted assessment methodologies for the buildings sector actors and will accelerate the transition of our cities and territories.
Go further and develop an actionable database of methodologies
The Working Group has the ambition to develop an analysis of resilience assessment methodologies of the built environment that will give actors the tools they need to facilitate adaptation in the face of climate change. The creation of an actionable database of methodologies serves two main objectives:
- On the one hand, offering a clear and comparable analysis of well-known existing references around the world so that actors along the value chain, whatever their own expertise may be, can find the methodology best suited for their needs;
- On the other hand, increasing knowledge and transparency to foster emulation, pinpoint expertise gaps, and help the emergence of new and more comprehensive assessment methodologies for all hazards, locations, and actors.
Learning through examples: case studies that embody the “10 principles for effective action on the adaptation to climate change”
Other central piece of this year’s work, this collection of case studies aims at showcasing innovative initiatives that fully embody the core values of the “10 principles for effective climate change adaptation action” published by this group. These 10 principles stem from an ongoing global initiative led by the Global ABC that aims at federating public and private stakeholders of the buildings and construction sector around common core values for adaptation action. The selected projects in this year’s deliverable range from hail resistant roofs in Calgary (Canada) to efforts to help a community rebound after devastating floods in Nabeul (Tunisia).
