Summary:
ICC’s event “Pathways to Climate Resilience: The Central Role of Building Codes in Climate Adaptation and Mitigation” addressed the role of modern building codes as an essential part of the solution to address the evolving threats to societies around the world. Governments are looking for ways to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions, and many state and non-state actors around the world have established and articulated policy-focused climate mitigation targets. An equal if not greater number of entities have proposed or implemented resilience measures to protect people and investment from hazards caused by the changing climate. In the built environment, where the construction and operation of buildings is responsible for roughly 40% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, communities need tools, resources and knowledge to create energy efficient buildings and reduce embodied carbon and GHG emissions while also protecting people and property from current and future hazards. Adopting and implementing strong building codes is the natural solution to enhancing sustainability and resilience while also bolstering the economy. This session provided attendees with information, educational materials and updates about the vital role that the adoption and enforcement of modern building codes can play in not only addressing energy efficiency but also other critical issues like climate mitigation and adaptation. While best known for ensuring the safety of our buildings and safeguarding the health and wellbeing of building occupants, building codes and standards like the International Codes (I-Codes) – the most widely accepted, comprehensive set of model codes worldwide – form an ecosystem of building policies aimed at realizing local, national, and international goals targets for economic growth, enhanced resilience, and energy and GHG emission reductions.
Background:
On 5 November, the International Code Council will host a session on "Pathways to Climate Resilience: The Central Role of Building Codes in Climate Adaptation and Mitigation" in GlobalABC's #BuildingsPavilion at COP26.
As countries race against time to future-proof our communities, it is imperative to recognize the vital role that the adoption and enforcement of modern building codes play in not only addressing energy efficiency but also other critical issues like climate mitigation and adaptation. While best known for ensuring the safety of our buildings and safeguarding the health and wellbeing of building occupants, building codes and standards form an ecosystem of building policies aimed at realizing local, national, and international goals targets for economic growth, enhanced resilience, and energy and GHG emission reductions.
