Description
In this thematic session, roadmaps for the decarbonization of buildings and construction sector are discussed in-depth. Their purpose is to give a long-term vision for the sector over a three-decade timeframe that would put it on track for full decarbonization by 2050 as outlined in the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action Human Settlements - Climate Action Pathway. This year, some national roadmaps have been launched (e.g. Colombia, India and Indonesia) and more are in the process of being developed. A subregional roadmap was launched also for the ASEAN region and another one is being finalised covering the Arab League countries. The session seeks to take stock of the work conducted on Buildings and Construction roadmaps, discuss their benefits and next steps towards their implementation.
While the uptake of the Building and Construction Roadmap model that was introduced by GlobalABC and IEA in 2016 has been successful and the potential of impactful measures has been outlined in the completed roadmaps, the next challenge is to their implementation as the best recommendations have limited value if they are not translated into policy or are only partly taken up by important stakeholders in the buildings and construction sector. Ensuring that stakeholders are engaged and share ownership and commitment is important in the development process of the roadmaps. In the implementation phase, the financial capacity of a country or region to act on the ground severely influences the extent to which the sector can transform into the desired direction.
Experts from governments – both from countries that have already undergone the roadmap process and others that are undertaking the effort – and organisations involved in the development of roadmaps will determine the current state of roadmap development and their strategy for implementation. The aim of the fireside chat is to discuss opportunities to share best practices on the development and use of the roadmaps and how these are/will be taken towards implementation.
