Session Description
Despite growing awareness of climate risks, the buildings and construction sector remains dangerously behind on adaptation, especially in terms of systemic planning, stakeholder coordination, and governance of resilience. This session will officially launch the Adaptation Pathways, a global framework that translates international climate commitments like the Chaillot Declaration and the Buildings Breakthrough into concrete, time-bound, and stakeholder-specific action tracks for the entire built environment value chain.
Developed by the GlobalABC and OID, the Pathways address Priority IV of the COP30 Presidential Agenda: “Building Resilience for Cities, Infrastructure, and Water”, with a particular focus on Objective 12: sustainable and resilient buildings and construction.
By presenting this tool and sharing use cases, the session will highlight how national and local governments, developers, designers, utilities, financiers, and civil society can each act within their scope while unlocking action from others. In doing so, the Pathways serve not only climate resilience, but also a just transition, by identifying concrete co-benefits for vulnerable populations, informal workers, and underserved territories.
Objectives
- Officially launch the Adaptation Pathways framework for the buildings and construction sector
- Showcase how the Pathways align with global frameworks like the Chaillot Declaration, the Buildings Breakthrough, National Adaptation Planning and cities Climate Action Plans
- Inform and connect stakeholders across sectors by illustrating how their role contributes to system-wide resilience
- Provide a climate solution (a publicly available tool) to guide implementation and collaboration
- Call for political support and first movers to support endorsement, testing, or implementation of the Pathways
- Contribute to COP30 Presidency Objective IV.12, demonstrating how the built environment can become a driver of climate resilience through sustainable and locally adapted construction and retrofitting strategies
