Building for Forests & People: Delivering Resilient and Responsible Buildings Solutions
| 11:00-12:00 Belém local time

Thematic Hub, COP30, Belém, Brazil

This event brings together SW4SW, FCLP, Built by Nature, GlobalABC, OID, ICC, ROOH, and SPARC to showcase how responsible timber construction and community-led buildings solutions can deliver resilient, affordable, and forest-positive outcomes for people and planet.

Session Description

As the buildings sector accounts for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, substituting carbon-intensive materials with sustainable materials that can deliver a resilient built environment and affordable housing scales up the socioeconomic benefits from climate solutions. Today 2.8 billion people lack access to adequate housing and basic services. Wood from sustainable and responsible forest value chains, replacing high-emission construction materials with renewable, carbon-storing alternatives offers a triple win: reducing emissions from building materials, fostering forest conservation and restoration, and enabling affordable, resilient housing. This event will focus on experiences to scale up climate-resilient and affordable housing, and on the objectives of the COP30 Acceleration Plan “Building for Forests: Accelerating Wood-Based Construction for Climate, Forests and Livelihoods Solution”.

This event brings together initiatives that are working to deliver scalable and inclusive solutions for address multiple developmental challenges at once, for instance climate mitigation and resilience, housing needs, and the added value to sustainable forest management and restoration: GlobalABC,  Roof Over Our Head (ROOH); Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World (SW4SW); the Forest & Climate Leaders’ Partnership, Built by Nature, and Dignity by Design.
