Session Description
Despite buildings being responsible for one-third of global energy-related CO₂ emissions, less than 5% of the global investment in the building sector goes to energy efficiency and sustainable construction and less than 1% of carbon credits were used to finance clean buildings. This event will showcase how development banks and carbon markets can close this finance gap.
The session will bring together leaders and experts from governments, development banks, carbon markets and the building sector to showcase how innovative financial mechanisms, through Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and public development finance, can accelerate investment in low-carbon and resilient buildings.
Participants will gain firsthand insights into new tools, success stories, and upcoming opportunities to finance buildings decarbonisation and resilience.
Hosted by the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion, at the heart of the Blue Zone, the event will have two parts:
Panel 1 highlights how countries can harness Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to mobilize climate finance for the buildings sector. It will feature the launch of a handbook for policymakers and share national experiences to illustrate effective project design, integrity criteria, and emerging methodologies.
Panel 2 focuses on the role of public and development finance institutions in scaling investments for climate-friendly buildings. Finance leaders and policymakers will discuss strategies to align portfolios, de-risk projects, and unlock capital for the transformation of the building sector.
