Session Description

Solution to new problems does not necessarily mean inventing new answers. It sometimes requires looking back at old solutions that worked perfectly in the past. Decarbonizing climate change urbanisms  investigated native science practises by the Yoruba ethnic, with historical reverberations across the Atlantic to South and Central America from colonial times. Outcomes show that cultural-led customs in the reservation of large sacred/heritage forests contributed positively to clean water, biodiversity preservation  and carbon sequestration benefits for people and climate well-being.

Sufficiency minimizes resource demand within planetary limits through strategies like reusing vacant spaces and limiting floor space per person, lowering environmental impacts while improving well-being.

The Sufficiency Action Hub (GlobalABC/ADEME, Activation Group 12) will present tools to approach and implement sufficiency mindfully. Decarbonizing Buildings Through Heritage (DBTH) (Activation Group 19) will launch Heritage Now!, emphasizing how knowledge intrinsic to heritage buildings, use of waste as a resource, place-based solutions and indigenous practices can help decarbonize buildings. The CNOA will showcase an Amazonian stilt-house prototype merging vernacular architecture with low-carbon design.

Finally, a roundtable of experts will deepen our reflection, followed by audience Q&A.

This event addresses COP30 objectives IV and V, contributing to systems transformation.
