A few months ahead of the 3 COPs at the end of 2024 (climate, biodiversity and desertification), Climate Chance presents a new cycle of eMags for the year, focusing on two areas: climate action in Africa and adaptation in Europe.
Each month, the eMag offers a space for sharing news, best practices and feedback, expertise and exchanges, based on the Observatory‘s analyses. Climate Chance thus pursues its mission of mobilising and working with a wide range of stakeholders on the major challenges of adapting to and mitigating climate change in Africa and Europe.
Therefore, the 2024 cycle of eMags focuses on two areas: climate action in Africa and adaptation in Europe.
Each issue focuses on an issue linked to the major challenges, news and Agenda of Action.
The eMag has a dual format: a 1.15 hour live online session featuring representatives from European and African territories, experts and field actors from the « climate community », for each theme covered, followed by a print and web magazine, all fully bilingual (French and English).
While African cities will be home to two-thirds of the continent's population by 2050, the rapid development of African urban areas is not sufficiently planned and organized. Providing the necessary infrastructure and urban services remains a major issue, resulting in the informalization of housing. Between 1990 and 2015, 90% of housing growth was informal and unplanned, with poor access to water and energy, increased pollution and public health problems. These areas are also more vulnerable to climate risks. To address this major issue, a first step was taken in October 2023 in Yaoundé with the adoption of the Yaoundé Roadmap on Sustainable Habitat by networks of international and African non-state actors. Despite this success, a number of steps still need to be taken to put the Roadmap's recommendations into practice.
What are these steps? How can the Yaoundé Roadmap be used to speed up the move towards sustainable habitat in Africa?
This eMag aims to provide an update on the Yaoundé Roadmap since its adoption at the Climate Chance Conference Africa 2023, to identify the next steps, particularly six months ahead of the 12th World Urban Forum in Cairo, and to suggest ways in which the various actors can work together to facilitate its implementation.
