The Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound management of Chemicals (IOMC) will organize a multi-stakeholder expert workshop (Geneva, Switzerland, 20-21 June 2023) to feed into the global negotiations. The workshop focuses on the development of global draft guidance to support economic sectors and industry strategies to advance chemicals and waste management. It will also explore the elements and activities of a possible Implementation Programme being considered under “Beyond 2020”. The workshop builds on the IOMC workshop on “Advancing Chemicals and Waste Management in Chemical Intensive Economic Sectors and Industries” which took place from 17-18 January 2023, in Paris, hosted by the OECD. Please see Annex 1 for a list of topics addressed by the two-day workshop. Draft documentation will be shared with all participants by 10 June 2023.

On 20 June 2023, industry and other stakeholders are invited to participate in a two-hour online session which will take place within the Geneva workshop. It recognizes that many stakeholders may not be available to attend the full two days. The consultation is expected to address a range of industry issues relevant to the Beyond 2020 negotiations. It will take place on day 1 of the workshop in the afternoon, from 2:30 to 4:30 PM CEST. Feedback and results from this consultation will inform workshop discussions on day two.

Guiding questions for the online consultation include:

• How can the future global framework on chemicals and waste management “Beyond 2020” spur engagement and enable action of downstream industries?
• How can a possible Global Implementation Programme under the future “Beyond 2020” framework be shaped to help advance chemicals and waste management in economic sectors and industries?
• What are the perspectives of industry stakeholders on the draft guidance to support strategies to advance the sound management of chemicals and waste and sustainable chemistry in economic sectors and industries?
• What actions could be considered by industry leaders working with relevant stakeholders in advance of ICCM5 and during ICCM5?
• Are you interested in joining and engaging?
