Net-zero buildings: Halving construction emissions now! - Report Launch

Join the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) on 31 January 2023 for their launch of the report Our Net-zero buildings: Halving construction emissions now!. In this Webinar, key elements from the report will be presented and discussions will be held around embodied carbon and how to reach net-zero buildings.

The built environment is a critical sector to decarbonize: it represents close to 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions – approximately 14 gigatons of carbon each year. Decarbonization trajectories in line with the 1.5 °C Paris Agreement aim to halve global carbon emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050, a need echoed by the United Nations-backed Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action in its climate action pathway. Part of this goal is to reduce embodied carbon by at least 40% overall and for leading projects to achieve a reduction of at least 50%.

The report builds on WBCSD's previous work on where we stand towards reaching net-zero buildings and aims to provide a deep look into potential strategies and measures that companies might deploy to halve embodied carbon emissions - those associated with building components - by 2030. Although some of these carbon emissions are hard to abate, we can, and we must, aim higher and immediately develop buildings with significantly less embodied carbon if the sector is to achieve the overall net-zero targets we strive for. For the built environment, 2030 is now.
