Event Description

Meeting climate goals requires extensive decarbonization of new and existing buildings. This panel will explore what is needed in a holistic policy approach including the adoption and enforcement of energy codes, as well as incentives, that will enable transformation to more climate-friendly buildings and meet climate commitments. Panelists will discuss the intersection of buildings and the energy grid including energy storage, distributed storage, renewables, smart appliances, and electric vehicles, and other technologies and practices available to help building owners and operators to make the transition to cleaner energy alternatives. The challenge of scaling existing building updates to reduce climate impacts and improve resilience such as through fire safety, as well as policy levers, will be explored. Overviews of available guides, rating systems, and standards applicable to energy storage and existing building energy performance will also be provided.
