While African cities will be home to two-thirds of the continent’s population by 2050, the development of African urban areas to meet this increase is not sufficiently planned or organised. Providing the necessary infrastructure and urban services remains a major issue, and the lack of it can result in informal housing. Between 1990 and 2015, 90% of the housing growth was informal and unplanned, with poor access to water and energy, increased pollution and public health problems. These areas are also more vulnerable to climate risks.
To address this major issue, the Yaounde Roadmap for Sustainable Habitats was adopted at the Climate Chance Conference Africa 2023 in Yaounde by networks of international and African non-state actors. Despite this development, a number of steps are still needed to put the Roadmap’s recommendations into practice.
Climate Chance invites you to the 1st eMag of the 2024 series on Climate Action in Africa, dedicated to Sustainable Habitats with a high-level panel.
This eMag aims to provide an update on the Yaounde Roadmap since its adoption, to identify the next steps, especially six months ahead of the 12th World Urban Forum in Cairo, and to suggest ways in which the various actors can work together to facilitate its implementation.
