Join this European Energy Network Presidency 2023 Workshop Series titled "MEPS and serial renovation – a turbo for the renovation wave in Europe?", taking place on 7 July 2023, 9:30-17:00 CEST in Montrouge, France, and online.
In order to achieve the European Union’s energy and climate goals, the EU is reviewing its energy and climate policy framework and tightening requirements for member states. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) plays a crucial role in EU policy as it is responsible for reducing a significant portion of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the European construction sector. The revised directive proposal presented by the EU Commission aims to increase the renovation rate and promote the modernization and decarbonization of buildings in the EU. That includes imposing stricter requirements for existing buildings.
The key points of the EPBD proposal include the design of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), which are regulated standards that require specific building types to meet a minimum level of energy performance. Some European member states have introduced MEPS, primarily targeting the worst-performing buildings. In order to implement MEPS, policymakers can support tools and innovative methods.
The current process of refurbishment is excessively complex and slow, posing challenges such as the high demand for skilled workers and exorbitant costs. These obstacles can be overcome through the implementation of serial renovations based on the EnergieSprong principle. By employing digitized and standardized processes coupled with prefabrication, refurbishment can be scaled up effectively. The EnergieSprong principle accelerates the construction process, yields a greater output per skilled worker, while simultaneously reducing costs through innovation and achieving economies of scale. Such advancements are crucial for the successful implementation of Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (NZEBs) and other energy performance standards.
In the upcoming EnR Workshop titled "MEPS and serial renovation – a turbo for the renovation wave in Europe?", we would like to discuss the current status of the EPBD, the role of MEPS, and present the EnergieSprong principle as a solution to facilitate the transformation towards modernized and carbon-neutral buildings. Since the event addresses participants from European energy agencies, we want to sharpen the role of energy agencies in the implementation of serial renovation - EnergieSprong method in a moderated discussion and share experiences and strategies approached throughout the EU.
