PEFC
Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) International
Address: Based in Geneva, Switzerland

MAIN GOALS - GENERAL ACTIVITIES - FIELD OF EXPERTISES

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.

By working throughout the entire forest supply chain, PEFC promotes good practice in the forest and ensures that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to the PEFC label, customers and consumers are able to identify products from sustainably managed forests.

As an umbrella organization, PEFC endorses national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions.

PEFC was founded by small- and family forest owners to demonstrate excellence in sustainable forest management. With 49 endorsed national certification systems and more than 330 million hectares of certified forests, PEFC is the world's largest forest certification system.

ACTIVITY RELATED TO LOW GHG AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND RESILIENT BUILDINGS

Building with responsibly sourced wood plays a key role in mitigating climate change, improving occupant health and well-being, while supporting rural development through the creation of forestry and supply chain jobs. But while built environment professionals are increasingly recognising the benefits of wood as a low carbon, 21st century construction material, the world’s forests still need to be maintained for future generations. So, it’s crucial that built environment professionals are encouraged to choose responsibly sourced wood.

PEFC certified timber originates in a sustainably managed forest which has been independently audited against demanding sustainability requirements. Our globally recognised certification programme ensures that forests are managed in ways that:
•    respect ecological, social and cultural context and aim to improve a forest’s economic value
•    support healthy forest ecosystems and wildlife habitats
•    help secure the livelihoods of forest workers and support local communities
•    facilitate carbon capture to help protect the environment for future generations.

As the largest buyer of wood products, the construction industry clearly has a central role to play in helping to secure a healthy future for the world’s forests.

PEFC International hosts regular webinars for built environment professionals to promote building with certified sustainable wood:
