Type: Case study
Material: Steel
Policy challenge: Circularity
Solutions: Avoid , Improve

The UK Government’s recent climate change legislation and the ambitious carbon targets from funders and end users, are encouraging developers and their design teams to look at exactly where carbon is contained within construction projects and where it can be reduced.

Effective re-use of steel offers significant reductions in carbon emissions compared to specifying new steel.  This case study from Heyne Tillett Steel profiles a project at Holbein Gardens in London, in which they partnered with Cleveland Steel, a specialist steel stockist dealing in reclaimed steel.  This partnership, which repurposed steel from existing sites as well as using Cleveland Steel's stock, enabled 35% of Holbein Gardens' steel to come from re-used sources.
