The World Championships for Energy Savings (WCES) is an international initiative supported by the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), designed to accelerate the global decarbonization agenda for the built environment as framed by the Buildings Breakthrough, the Chaillot Declaration, and the COP Action Agenda. Supported by national governments, the WCES is a global championship for buildings based on real metered energy data. It identifies the buildings achieving the most significant reductions in energy consumption and reaching the lowest consumption thresholds.
Because energy savings can be objectively measured and optimized, the WCES promotes the use of real measured performance data to assess energy efficiency across the built environment. To support this approach, it provides robust measurement tools, clear long-term performance trajectories, and locally adapted policy guidance for participants. Each year, the best-performing buildings from around the world will be rewarded at COP during a global high-level ceremony bringing together building managers, supporting countries, and multilateral partners.
Through this initiative, the WCES aims to reveal today’s champions and best practices to help shape tomorrow’s policies and standards.
Objectives
• Mobilize the building sector around real performance and continuous operational excellence (building operations, tenant engagement, smart capital investments),
• Objectively measure and compare energy performance in buildings to identify and scale best practices,
• Recognize energy champions at national and global levels,
• Support the alignment of market practices with long-term climate and energy objectives,
• Support the alignment of policies with the most efficient and scalable market practices based on real energy data,
• Prepare for scale by mobilizing early adopters, tested methodologies, and decisionmakers to scale ambition with minimal public expenditure and strong market alignment,
• Contribute to international leadership of supporting countries on building decarbonization.
Activities
• Develop and operate an online platform to support national energy leagues and their champions, share what works, and turn isolated success into worldwide best practice,
• Assist supporting countries in the deployment of their national energy leagues, or link existing energy efficiency programs to showcase their champions on the WCES platform,
• Provide each supporting country with a ranking of the most performing buildings submitted,
• Publish a world ranking of the most performing buildings worldwide, ranked by building type, activity category, and climate,
• Organize the annual COP WCES Award to reward the world’s most performing buildings for each edition,
• Support performance-based and result-oriented policies worldwide.
Contact and how to join
• As a country, you may support the development of a national energy league to spotlight your leading building champions and showcase national leadership on energy efficiency. If you’d like to support the development of a national league, please contact the WCES team.
• As a partner, you may support the development of the initiative through outreach, technical support, implementation, data verification, or case study production. If you’d like to support the development of the WCES, please contact the WCES team.
• As a building owner or manager, you may submit your best-performing buildings through the WCES platform. If you’d like to submit a building, please register on the WCES login page.
